Background Information:
A large spoon-shaped rock basin which is faulted along its north west edge. It covers an area of 8,000 ha. The basin slopes towards the centre and its outer edge is a ring of cliffs. The pinkish walls of the basin are thick beds of hard Pound quartzite, dipping inwards at 15° to 30°. The highest point is St Marys Peak. Apart from tourism associated with the unique formation of Wilpena Pound, the region is mainly used for extensive grazing, supporting sheep for wool.
